Poem 45

If They Could Speak

Just imagine, if you can,
what everything would say
if God waved His mighty hand,
and let things talk one day.

I bet my dog lying there
on that hard wood floor,
would ask me to pet his hair.
When I stopped he’d say “more!”.

Those crazy squirrels in my yard
that are jumping all around,
would ask for acorns not so hard
to bury in the ground.

That wise old owl in the dark
would ask a question new.
For ever since he left the ark
all he could say was “Who?”.

What would the cat that likes to sneak
and glance with a cunning eye,
say to us if he could speak?
And would it be a lie?

Now just think, if God did give
the unborn use of their voice
I’m sure they’d say, “We want to live!
But we just don’t have a choice.”
