Poem 38

Wax, Cloth, and Axe

Tom works at Aid for Women,
With a smile on his face
He's a quiet, gentle, loving man
With an abundance of God's grace.

I work at my office
Not knowing what to do
I'm an overweight, loud, obnoxious guy
But I think God still loves me too.

A woman tells dear Thomas
Her child inside must die
And smiling, quiet, gentle Tom
Softly question's "Why?"

A man down at my office
Says "Abortion... it's O.K."
I shout and scream "You kill a child
When people talk and think that way!"

Tom gently shows the woman
A better alternative
He softly reveals the truth
And she lets her child live.

All day long I scream and shout
"Abortion is NOT O. K. "
Finally the man agrees
Before I let him on his way.

The carpenter uses axe and chisel
When he first shapes the pine
He finishes with cloth and wax
To make it gleam and shine.

When God does His work
Tom is His cloth and wax
And I really would like to think
That I could be His axe.
