To Tom

There are many things a man can do on his trek to God
But if he stops to think a bit, he would agree it’s odd
To spend his life in quest of what he will leave on earth
And never stop to ask himself just what his life is worth.

What great task did my Lord God send for me to do?
Will I fail and have regrets when my life is through?
Where do I find the answer, is there someone I can ask?
Why did You, God, make it so hard just to find my task?

I’ve turned to clergy, I’ve tried to pray, no answer do I see.
I feel that I am lost and blind, or is it just my stupidity
Then one truth seems to merge from the darkness all about,
It starts out a wisper in the quiet, and soon builds to a shout.

Those that find the answer and know why life is worth while
Will show God’s peace in their eyes, and gently they will smile.
So now I know for whom to look, and in time I end my search
I find a man with God in his eyes, praying in life and in church.

This is a man I scarcely know, but I see him now and then
The kind of man I’d like to think is more than just a friend.
While we struggle to find our way in this world filled with strife,
This gentle man, with a peaceful smile, saves an unborn child’s
    life.
